Ride Description

SUMMARY: We will meet in Plymouth on Friday September 10, 2010 for social hour and a group dinner. The last day of riding is Friday Sept 17, ending back in Plymouth. This is something of a ''hybrid'' fixed-base/point to point tour in that we will begin and end in the same location but stay at three different locations during the week; two nights in Plymouth, three up in the White Mountains, and two at a historic camp/resort on a nearby lake. In that the tour starts and ends in our home town of Plymouth, we are very familiar with various route options. The planned rides will be 2B+ with longer and more climbing options available. Some days, we will suggest options that include dirt roads, so if interested, bring your 28+ tires. Our dirt roads tend to be smooth(ish) and very enjoyable. If and when on dirt roads, we will encourage group riding. The weather in New Hampshire in the Fall is as hard to predict as all New England Weather. Those of you from the West who are accustomed to perfect weather, remember your rain and wind gear. DESCRIPTION: We will spend the first two nights in Plymouth at the Common Man Inn (www.theCmaninn.com). Plymouth is a small University town of about 6,000 residents located in the ‘foothills' of the White Mountain National Forest. Plymouth is a very bicycle active town with group rides heading out into the hills almost every afternoon of the week. The Common Man Inn is a lovely full service Inn with a top notch bicycle shop next door. The first day of riding will be an out and back to Waterville Valley, a ski resort area 20 miles north of Plymouth. The second day we will ride further north into the White Mountains and stay three nights in the resort town of North Woodstock at the Woodstock Inn (www.WoodstockInnNH.com). From there we will do three day rides; first up into Franconia Notch, then over the trans White Mountain National Forest Kancamagus Highway, and finally over Mount Moosilaukee and back to Plymouth. From the mountains, we will ride back south for a two night stay at a unique lake retreat named Rockywold-Deephaven Camps (www.rdcsquam.com) on Squam Lake (of On Golden Pond fame). This is a retreat of rustic camps and lodges hosting summer groups since 1897. We will all stay in a lodge or cabins and eat in the communal dining room (breakfast 8AM, dinner 6PM). The rooms are rustic with two single beds and some shared baths. One of the days there will be a ''rest'' day with two group activities; one a moderate hike up nearby Rattlesnake Mountain, and another a surprise bound to be a BAC first! We hope to have the Camp Director give an evening talk on his recent participation in RAAM - Race Across America. Our Tour will end back in Plymouth. A van will be provided with the hope that some riders will volunteer to drive one of the three legs during our week of riding. If some want to extend their visit on either end, Plymouth is only an hour plus from the Mount Washington Valley or the Maine/NH seacoast. The annual ‘Gathering of the Clans', the Scottish highland festival and games, will be held Sept 17, 18, and 19 in nearby Lincoln, NH (www.nhscot.org). Lodging fills up early, so if you plan to extend your stay at the front or back end, make reservations early. LOGISTICS: Plymouth is a one hour drive up I-93 from Manchester, NH, and a 2 hour drive up I-93 from Boston. The Manchester Airport is now called Manchester/Boston and has service from a wide variety of airlines. Sometimes it is actually cheaper to fly into/out of Manchester than the Boston Airport. Be sure to compare options. There is regular bus service (Concord Trailways) from Boston to Concord, NH, and about twice daily service from Concord to Plymouth. COSTS: Estimated cost is $800 which includes 7 nights lodging, three dinners, five breakfasts, happy hours, and the $50 registration fee (non-refundable). To register, click the sign-up links just below this ride description. After e-mail acceptance, please mail $300.00 deposit to the Ride Leaders. BAC members may contact the Ride Leaders by clicking the name at the top of the Ride Description. Singles are encouraged, but we request that singles find their own roommates. We will assist in this effort. CANCELLATION: Any refunds are dependent on our finding a replacement from the wait list. If we can fill your position, you will receive a refund minus the $50 BAC administrative fee. If we are not able to fill your position, any refund will be based on the principle that costs will not increase for those who complete the tour. Any refunds will happen after the tour is completed.
