Ride Description

OVERVIEW
Although Moab has long been known as a mountain biking mecca, this area also has some fabulous road bike routes with low traffic, as well as outstanding hiking trails and scenery around every bend. This is a fixed based road bike/hike tour, with a scheduled day off providing an option to rest or to take in some of the many other activities offered in the area, such as excellent mountain biking, river rafting or rock climbing. Our road bike rides will be in Arches National Park, Canyon lands National Park, Corona Arch and along the Colorado River. Hikes will take place in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks as well as the popular local trails Corona Arch, and Fisher Towers.

RIDE RATING
The four core rides offered have an average elevation gain of 1,500 feet and average distance of 40 miles for a 2B rating.  Two of the rides are fairly flat while another is rolling with 3,200 feet of climbing.  There is a relatively short steep climb into Arches National Park. The ratings for the core rides are 1A, 1B, 2B and 3B.  Three of the rides are out and back and the longer of these (3B) will offer a shorter option with less climbing if desired. The remaining ride will be a remote start in Canyonlands NP, which will require transportation from the hotel.  Shorter distances and elevations are optional every cycle day, and longer distances with additional climbing will be offered on some rides. Maps and cue sheets will be provided for the road routes each day.  Note that Moab is slightly over 4,000 feet in elevation and some of the rides reach elevations of over 6,000 feet.

WEATHER
Climate in October is arid and most days will be sunny or partly sunny.  Average rain for the month is less than 1 inch.  Average high/low daily temperatures are 76°F/53°F.

LODGING & MEALS
We will spend nine nights (Saturday night - Monday morning) at the Holiday Inn Express in Moab.  The Holiday Inn Express is at the north end of town within a short drive or moderate walking distance to restaurants and bike shops.  The hotel provides high speed Internet, bike storage and repair facilities, laundry, a heated pool, and hot tub.

Meals included in the cost of this tour include two group dinners, a pizza night, 9 breakfasts, and 8 lunches.  On this trip all participants will be asked to help share in the responsibilities of laying out happy hours and lunch preparations on a rotational basis.

LOGISTICS
Moab is located on US 191 south of I-70 in southeast Utah, 110 miles southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado and 236 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. Commercial airlines serve Grand Junction and Salt Lake City and there is also a small airport in Moab. Because some of the rides and all of the hikes start outside of town participants are encouraged to bring their vehicles. However, if that is not feasible carpooling can be arranged each day. We will meet the first night (Saturday October 7, 2017) at 5:00pm in the lobby of the Holiday Inn Express in Moab for Happy Hour.  Our last night at the Holiday Inn Express will be October 15, 2017, and we will depart the morning of October 16th.

COST & ADMINISTRATION
The estimated cost of $1,575 per person includes: 9 nights of lodging (double occupancy), 2 group dinners, a pizza night, 9 breakfasts, 8 lunches, happy hours, maps and route sheets.  The $50 BAC Registration fee is not included and is paid directly to BAC upon registration. The initial deposit is $800, with the balance of $775 due on May 1, 2017.  The single supplement cost is $940.

SINGLES & SOLOS POLICY
Singles are welcome.  It is recommended that singles who want a roommate first attempt to find their own.  If a single signs up and pays their initial deposit without a roommate, they will be placed on the ride and given until 6/15/17 to find a roommate. If a roommate is not found by 6/15/17, the single may cancel with a full refund (minus the $50 BAC fee) or pay the single supplement cost.  If a single pays the additional $940, they may continue to seek a roommate, but must plan to participate without a roommate if necessary.  The ride leader will assist by attempting to match singles that apply for the ride.

CANCELLATION POLICY
The BAC ride registration fee is not refundable unless the entire tour is cancelled.  Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped.  The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour’s remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations.  If the canceling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time.  If the canceling participant can't be replaced, any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report are completed.  If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped the cancelling roommate may also be liable for the single supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour.  BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.

Ride Participant Responsibility
Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support.  Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles.   All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour.  We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to request from Ride Leader.  While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and clean-up.  Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour.  Please keep the ride leader informed of any special request you may have and respect the ride leader’s decisions.

SIGN-UP
To submit a request to join this ride use the "links" displayed above this Ride Description.  When you are accepted, the Ride Leader will move you from the Waitlist to the Pending List.  At this time you will receive an email notification to login to the BAC website to sign the release of liability form and pay the non-refundable BAC ride registration fee online.  Once those steps have been completed, the initial deposit of $800 will be due.  To contact the Ride Leader, "click" the name at the top of this Ride Description.
