Ride Description

OVERVIEW
Enjoy a beautiful 8-day ride and hike in sunny Arizona getting in shape for the riding season.  Take advantage of opportunities to hike, attend Spring Training Baseball games, attend a musical and visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum. This fixed base tour is based in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe, located just south of Scottsdale. The location offers many excellent biking and hiking routes. Participants will be provided with cue sheets and GPS files. Rides will be out and back, loops, and 1-way rides using light rail and/or vehicle transport. Hiking will also be available in the hills surrounding the Phoenix area. Our base is located near the campus of Arizona State University. The musical “The King and I” will be playing at the University. This musical will be held at Grady Gammage Auditorium designed by Frank Lloyd Wright during the last two years of his life. There is also a Frank Lloyd Wright Museum in Scottsdale.

RIDE RATING
1B – Routes are relatively flat and vary from 1A with options to 2B. We will mostly use bike trails, bike lanes, and bike routes for our rides which range from 30-60 miles.  On some days, we will use remote starts, or use light rail to or from the hotel. Seniors 65 & over can purchase discount light rail tickets. The bicycle friendly light rail is adjacent to the hotel and allows access to Phoenix, Tempe and East Mesa. Scottsdale is accessible via bicycle friendly roads and bicycle trails. Some of the riding will be on city streets and  participants should be comfortable riding with traffic.

WEATHER
Weather is normally sunny, and in most years, the daily maximum temperature for March is between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 28 degrees Celsius). The minimum temperature usually falls between 51 and 56 °F (11 to 13 °C). The days in Tempe heat up more quickly during March. A light jacket is a good idea for morning starts. Smart cyclists should also consider bringing full finger gloves, long pants, light rain gear and sunscreen.

LODGING & MEALS
Our lodging will be the Holiday Inn Express, 1031 E Apache Blvd, Tempe, Arizona, 480-966-7202, which is the base for our tour.  We will spend all 8 nights there. There will be 2 group dinners, 8 Happy Hours and 8 breakfasts included in the cost of the tour. Participants will be asked to assist on a rotational basis with set-up of happy hours.

LOGISTICS
The Phoenix  airport is about 6 miles from our Tempe base. Participants who fly-in can use the free shuttle provided by the hotel, rent a car, ride light rail or take a taxi or ride sharing to get to the hotel. Our hotel is located approximately a quarter mile from the light rail station. The first group meeting will be on Monday, March 19th at 5:00pm in the hotel breakfast area where we will enjoy happy hour each evening as we review the next day’s ride and/or hike. The tour ends after breakfast on Tuesday, March 27th. There are various bike shops in the Tempe area. Participants who are interested in bike rentals will need to make their own arrangements. Rentals start at $160, plus taxes, for a basic steel road bike for the week.

COST & ADMINISTRATION
The tour cost of $1,450 includes 8 night lodging (double occupancy), 2 group dinners, 8 breakfasts and 8 happy hours, plus maps, cue sheets and GPX files for down loading to your own GPS devices. The initial deposit of $750 does not include the BAC registration fee of $50 and both will be due upon acceptance to the ride. The final payment of $700 is due on December 1, 2017. The tour fee does not include ground transportation, light rail fares, bike rental, or any entry fees to shows, baseball games, museums, etc.

SINGLES & SOLOS POLICY
Single and solo riders will be accepted. While we encourage singles to try to find their own roommate, we will assist singles who are looking for a roommate. If a roommate cannot be found by January 1, 2018, participants can cancel without penalty (except the BAC registration fee and credit card processing fees) or singles can pay the solo supplement of $800 and have a room to themselves.  Single supplement payments will need to be made directly to the Ride Leader.

CANCELLATION POLICY
The BAC ride registration fee and payment processing fees are not refundable unless the entire tour is canceled.  Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped. The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour’s remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations. If the cancelling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time. If the cancelling participant can’t be replaced any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report are completed. If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped the cancelling roommate may also be liable for the single supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour. BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.

RIDE PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY
Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support.  Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles.  All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour. We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to requests from Ride Leader. While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and clean-up.  Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour.  Please keep the Ride Leader informed of any special request you may have and respect the Ride Leader’s decisions.
