Ride Description

Meet Tue, June 30, 2009, in Kalispell, Montana (served by rail and air). Last cycling day Fri, July 17, in Jasper, Alberta, with chartered bus to return to Kalispell on Sat, July 18. This is a repeat of the ride done several times between 1991 and 2007, and is a second section to the ride meeting on June 27. Ride through five National Parks (Glacier, Waterton Lakes, Kootenay, Banff, and Jasper) with spectacular scenery and with a few exceptions (including approx 45 miles with sometimes troublesome rumble strips), excellent roads for cycling. On the second day we follow the "Going to the Sun Road", advertised as the "most beautiful 50 mile drive in America," eastward over the continental divide in Glacier Park. We go north into Canada, enjoy an off-bike day in Waterton National Park, and continue north to Pincher Creek. Then west, back across the continental divide into British Columbia and up the Kootenay River Valley to Radium Hot Springs (with hot springs pools on two evenings). Then we cross the divide for a third and final time for a layover day in Banff. Two days later we have a third rest day at Lake Louise. The layover days offer many off-bike activities, including hiking, boat rides, aerial trams to mountain tops, and countless photo opportunities, as well as cycling. Leaving Lake Louise, we follow the Icefield Parkway with wide shoulders, near-by glaciers, lakes, and wildlife. Early in the season, we can expect high water levels, some residual snow, and good waterfalls. Average day 52 miles, longest day 83 miles followed by the rest day in Banff. Although the ride is rated 2C there are only two days with riding over 70 miles, with seven days in the 45-70 mile range, and five shorter days. Two days have difficult terrain, with 4500 - 5000 feet of climbing. Weather conditions can be variable, with rain, wind, or even snow possible. Estimated total cost including 19 nights accommodations (including first and last nights in Kalispell), van, bus return to Kalispell, 3 dinners and 1 breakfast is $2,450, subject to change depending on exchange rates and completion of arrangements. Ride Director and/or his wife will drive van. Cancellation policy: If a rider cancels and the place is filled, deposits less the $50 BAC cancellation fee will be refunded. If the place is not filled, refunds will be based on the principle that the cancellation will not increase the cost to remaining participants. This would include deducting a share of van and bus costs (with fuel costs up, this would be significant) and single supplements if a rider is left without a roommate. Initial deposit $250, (not to be sent until confirmation of acceptance is received,) to Sid Russak, 6179 E Briarwood Circle, Centennial, CO 80112. Phone (303) 773-3434. After Nov 1, address and phone: 34976 Staccato St., Palm Desert, CA 92211 (760) 200-0614. E-mail sid_russak@msn.com
