Ride Description

OVERVIEW

This ride is an outgrowth of personal cycling experiences we have enjoyed in the region.  We will travel from our hotel near the Turin airport through the country side of the provinces of Piedmonte and Liguria Italy to the Italian Riviera coast of the Ligurian Sea, and circle back around returning to the same hotel near the airport where our bike bags have been stored.  Piedmont is renowned for its wines including the Barolos, Barberesscos, Asti Spumante and Ruche. The slow food movement, Romanesque architecture and charming villages are typical in the region. The villages are connected by quiet roads off the main tourist routes.  The Ligurian coast of the Mediterranean Sea is known as the Italian Riviera and features wonderful seafood.   We will be spending 2 nights in Barolo, with a wine tasting one afternoon and one evening open to enjoy the restaurant of your choice. After leaving Barolo on our way to the sea we will stay in a country inn outside of Miillesimo before visiting Finale Ligure and Varazze on the coast.  Heading north we will spend 2 nights in Cortamilia where we will be treated to a course on the wines of the region.  Skirting around the city of Asti we will visit Rocca di Arazzo before spending 2 nights in Corteranzo.  The ride leader has extensive riding experience in this area and will rescout the entire route prior to the start of the tour.

RIDE RATING

2B!  There will be 2 days that exceed the 2B rating: Day 6 with 3199’ and 30.1 miles, and Day 9 with 4284’ and 35 miles.  Distances average 30 miles per day and the longest ride is 35 miles.  There will be days with alternate routes of varying degrees of difficulty if you want to explore the area.

WEATHER

Weather in the fall can range from the mid 60’s to the mid 70’s and days are mostly sunny.  Rain can always happen so don’t leave your rain gear behind!  Evenings cool down to the 50’s.

LODGING

We will be staying primarily in three star hand-picked boutique hotels in small villages, three of which we will enjoy for 2 nights.  We will have tasting sessions of the local wines at several of our hotels and will enjoy group meals featuring Piedmontese and Ligurian specialties made from the freshest local foods available, including dinner at a Michelin star restaurant.  We will have 5 nights that you will be on your own for dinner.  We will have a social hour every day.

LOGISTICS

The trip will start and end at the Jet Hotel near the Turin (Turino) airport.  Plan to have checked in and have your bikes assembled and ready to roll before the social hour at 6 pm on September 21, 2016.  The trip ends with breakfast on October 5, 2016.  Typically the van will be loading at 8:30 am each travel day.

COST & ADMINISTRATION

Cost estimate is $2700 per person based on double occupancy at $1.35/Euro, and includes 14 nights, 9 dinners, 14 breakfasts, wine tastings,  luggage van, detailed maps, route sheets, daily socials, and sightseeing information. This is only an estimate as it is still dependent on the value of the Euro. An initial deposit of $1,000 is due when you have been accepted on to the ride, and have signed the on line ROL and paid the non-refundable BAC fee of $100.  Additional payments will be required in 2016.

SINGLES
Singles are welcome and encouraged to find compatible roommates. The Ride Directors will introduce and assist singles to find roommates, but singles must make their own rooming decision. We do not take solos due to room limitations at most of the hotels.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The $100 BAC ride registration fee is not refundable unless the entire tour is cancelled.  Refunds will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped. The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour's remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations. If the canceling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time. If the canceling participant can't be replaced, any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report is completed. If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped, the canceling roommate may be liable for the single supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour. BAC encourages members to purchase personal trip cancellation insurance.

RIDE PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY

BAC tours depend on participants providing much of their own support. Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles. All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable ride.
