† Explanation of BAC Ride Fee – This fee is not included in the Estimated Cost and is non-refundable once submitted. The Ride Fee for US and Canada is $50 and $100 for all other countries, both are per participant.
Overview
This 7-day fixed base ride is centered in the city of Oceanside along the southern California coast which is located half way between San Diego and Orange County. The location offers many excellent bike routes to the north, east, and south. We will explore all these directions, with out and back rides, loops, and 1-way rides using commuter trains. So grab your biking gear, meet us in Oceanside California, and enjoy the stunning scenery of California’s southern Pacific coast and inland areas.
Ride Rating
2B – Routes vary from relatively flat along the coast to moderately hilly inland. We will mostly use bike trails, bike lanes, and bike routes for our rides which range from 30-60 miles. On some days, participants will have the option to make the ride shorter by using bike friendly public transportation back to Oceanside. Seniors (60 & over San Diego County, 65 & over Orange County) can purchase half price transit tickets.
Weather
Average Oceanside temperatures in November range from highs of 73 to lows of 44. A light jacket is a good idea for morning starts. Smart cyclists should also consider bringing full finger gloves, long pants, and light rain gear.
Lodging & Meals
Our lodging will be the Holiday Inn Oceanside Camp Pendleton area (1-760-231-7000), which is the base for our tour. We will spend all 7 nights there. There will be 2 group dinners, 7 Happy Hours* and 7 breakfasts.
*Note on Happy Hours: Participants will be asked to assist on a rotational basis with set-up of happy hours.
Logistics
The Orange County airport (SNA) and San Diego airport (SAN) are both about 50 miles from Oceanside. Participants who fly-in can rent a car to get to Oceanside, or you can take a short taxi ride from the airport to the nearby train station where you can catch one of the commuter trains to Oceanside. Ride Leaders can pick up participants from the Oceanside train station, if requested. Our hotel is located about 1 mile from the train station and 300 yards from the beach. The first group meeting will be on Nov. 11 at 5:00pm on the roof top patio where we will enjoy happy hour each evening as we watch the sun set into the Pacific Ocean. The tour ends after breakfast on Nov. 18.
There are various bike shops in Oceanside and near-by Carlsbad. Participants who are interested in bike rentals will need to make their own arrangements. Rentals run about $200 for a week.
Cost & Administration
The tour cost of $950 includes 7 night lodging (double occupancy), 2 group dinners, 7 breakfasts and 7 happy hours, plus maps, cue sheets and GPX files for down loading to your own GPS devices. The initial deposit of $500.00 does not include the BAC registration fee of $50 and both will be due upon acceptance to the ride. The final payment of $450 is due on May11, 2017.
The tour fee does not include transportation to/from Oceanside, train fares, bike rental or entry fees.
Singles & Solos Policy
Single and solo riders will be accepted. While we encourage singles to try to find their own roommate, we will assist singles who are looking for a room mate. If a roommate cannot be found by August 1, 2017, participants can cancel without penalty (except the BAC registration fee) or singles can pay the solo supplement of $460 and have a room to themselves.
Cancellation Policy
The BAC ride registration fee is not refundable unless the entire tour is cancelled. Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped. The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour’s remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations. If the cancelling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time. If the cancelling participant can’t be replaced any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report are completed. If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped the cancelling roommate may also be liable for the single supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour. BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.
RIDE PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY
Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support. Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles. All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour. We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to requests from Ride Leader. While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and clean-up. Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour. Please keep the Ride Leader informed of any special request you may have and respect the Ride Leader’s decisions.
