Ride Description
Think of yourself singing the Sound of Music with Julie Andrews as you ride around Salzburg's beautiful lakes and mountains. The sights are breath taking! This tour is designed to ride along 7 different lakes in the Salzburg Lake District of Austria while allowing time on the non-move days to hike to the highest waterfall in Austria - Kremml Falls, or tour Austria's highest mountain and ride the GrossGlockner. We will also have the opportunity to tour an underground working salt mine! Our accommodations include everything from four-star resorts, staying in resort houses on the edge of Lake Hallstatter See to family owned hotels to three and four star hotels along the route. Check the photos and tripper report for this 2018 ride.
Arrival Day is Monday August 29, (Day #1) in Salzburg. One can fly to Munich International Airport (MUC) and catch an easy train ride to Salzburg or fly into Salzburg (SZG). Our departure will be the morning of Wednesday September 14, (day #17). We will spend Day #1 and #2 in the Salzburg area to adjust to the new time zone and to obtain any necessary items needed for our bikes along with sight seeing and beer/wine tasting. Day #3 our first day of riding will take us to the beautiful town of Sankt Johann in Ponga. Day #4 takes us to Zell am See for three nights where there are many hikes and things to explore and see. Day #7 Lofer. Day #8 back to Salzburg for one night. Day #9 St Gilgen for two nights overlooking Lake Wolfgangsee. Day #11 Obertraun - two nights on the shore of Lake Hallstattsee. Day #13 Ebensee along Lake Traunsee. Day #14 Seehof on Lake Mondsee. Day #15 Seeham over looking Lake Obertrumer See. Day #16 takes us back to Salzburg for our final group dinner. Day #17 depart from Salzburg or a train ride back to the Munich airport. The reason for the extra day in Salzburg is to ensure all bikes and bike rentals are ready for the day we depart. The Ride Director led this ride in 2018.
RIDE RATING: The trip is rated a 2B! I have placed the "!" because the roads surfaces are quite varied (see Bicycles below). However, the rides range from 1A to one 3B ride. One day has 44 miles and 2,528’ elevation. The average daily riding is 33 miles and 1,775' of elevation gain. The total mileage is 332 miles and 17,746' of elevation gain.
ROUTING EXPECTATIONS: Due to the complexity of riding in foreign countries, all participants should have GPS units, or be able to download Ride With GPS files to their smart phones to follow the routes. Ride With GPS also allows those who wish to print maps and cue sheets. Riders are expected to be comfortable riding on a multitude of surfaces (including cobblestone, compact dirt, loose dirt, and on bike paths) along with riding in city traffic in and out of Salzburg. A general map of the area will be provided to each rider. Participants should have better than average map reading and directional skills.
WEATHER: Riders should plan on cooler morning and evening temperatures along with rain days. Temperatures can range from lows of 47F to highs of 80F. Bring your full rain gear! On this ride, everything is green for a reason.
LUGGAGE SUPPORT: We will have a luggage van, which will transport luggage. Participants are expected to ride the entire route and will be transported only in the case of injury or illness. Riders should be able to handle their own bike repairs, at a minimum how to change a tire.
LUGGAGE: Luggage is restricted to two carry on pieces each under 25 lbs! If you travel with a bike box and a large suitcase, you’ll need to bring along two duffle bags to transfer items from your large suitcase into your two travel duffle bags.
BICYCLES: Your bicycle should have tires that are 28mm or larger in size!! Smaller size tires are HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED! 2018 riders found riding with their travel road bikes with 23mm or 25mm size tires was very hazardous on wet surfaces and difficult at times on the dirt surfaces. They all agreed cross bikes would work well for this ride. You will be riding on all types of surfaces – everything from nice smooth paved bike paths, to cobblestone, compact dirt paths, to short single-track paths, to farm roads to city streets. Bike boxes can be left at the starting hotel in Salzburg. Please contact the ride leader to discuss the various bicycle options such as tandems and E-bikes. Participants need to search the web if they wish to rent bikes.
LODGING & MEALS: Lodging will be in everything from a five-bedroom home to family owned hotels to 3 and 4 star hotels. All breakfasts and 10 group dinners are included in the cost of the tour. Happy hours will be at the hotel's bar, which will include a glass of house wine or a local beer before each night’s dinner.
LOGISTICS: Fly into Salzburg airport (SGZ). Arrival day is Monday, August 29, 2022. Flying into the Munich International airport (MUC) and catching a nice 2-1/2 hour train ride to Salzburg for ~€30 is an option. Download the free app Rome2Rio for more travel information. Our first formal meeting is at 5:00pm followed by a group dinner. The end of the ride is Wednesday, morning, Sept 14, 2022.
COST & ADMINISTRATION: The cost estimate is $3,200, which includes 16 days lodging, all breakfasts, 11 group dinners, happy hour drinks, RWGPS files for down loading to your GPS/cell phone devices. Estimated cost is based on an exchange rate of 1 Euro = $1.25. The initial deposit of $2,000 does not include the BAC registration fee of $100 and both will be due upon acceptance to the ride. The final payment of $1,200 is due on February 19, 2022. However the final payment may be adjusted up or down based on the exchange rate at the time and number of riders over the minimum number.
SINGLES & SOLOS:
Singles (riders who have or who want a roommate) will be accepted, but, due to limited room availability in certain locations, leader cannot accept solos (riders who want their own room). While we encourage singles to try to find their own roommate, we will assist singles that are looking for a roommate. If a roommate cannot be found by February 19, 2020, participants can cancel without penalty (except the BAC registration fee and payment processing fees) or pay the additional cost for the hotel rooms.
CANCELLATION POLICY
The BAC ride registration fee and payment processing fee is not refundable unless the entire tour is cancelled due to participation below stated minimum requirements.. Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped. The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour’s remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations. If the cancelling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time. If the cancelling participant can't be replaced, any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report are completed. If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped the cancelling roommate may also be liable for the single supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour. BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.
RIDE PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY
Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support. Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles. All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour. We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to requests from Ride Leader. While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and cleanup. Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour. Please keep the Ride Leader informed of any special request you might have and respect the Ride Leader’s decisions.
Before participating in any BAC tour, members should review their medical coverage and assess whether what you have is sufficient. If it isn’t, you should purchase additional travel medical coverage. BAC maintains a policy that provides coverage for expenses related to medical emergencies and repatriation when members are on tours outside the US and their home country. The policy ceases to be applicable if a member makes a personal deviation (e.g., makes a side trip not related to the planned BAC tour), has limits on expenses covered for family members and only applies for 45 days following departure from home. The policy maintained by BAC does not cover costs associated with self-quarantines that may be government mandated. Members should also ensure that vaccinations are up to date (e.g., annual influenza, tetanus, etc.). If travelling outside your home country you may wish to consult with a travel physician or nurse to ensure that the appropriate vaccinations are up to date
