Ride Description

OVERVIEW:  Come and enjoy a fixed base tour of California's stunning Central Coast area.  Paso Robles offers exceptional cycling on lightly traveled roads that are bordered by Coastal live oaks, fruit, nut and olive orchards, large ranches as well as hundreds of vineyards and wineries.  Riders will be able to cycle to the beautiful Pacific Ocean as well as pedal to the San Andreas Fault.  All participants must have been fully vaccinated prior to starting the tour and be prepared to present vaccination documentation for viewing by the Ride Leader if requested.

RIDE RATING:  The ride rating for this fixed-base tour is 3B.  There are multiple route options for average to accomplished riders. The terrain is as varied as it is beautiful with daily averages of 35-50 miles and 2,500 to 3,500 feet of elevation gain.  There are no mandatory ride days and this ride IS NOT SAG VEHICLE SUPPORTED.  Tandem riders may find some of the routes quite challenging, but are welcome along with any riders wanting to use their E-bikes.  I have prepared more than a dozen routes for you to choose from during our five days of riding.  Distances and climbing may be shorter and/or longer than suggested below (most difficult route is 65 miles with 5667 ft ascent).  In addition, there will be a suggested route which will be reviewed each night during route wrap the prior evening.

The suggested routes are as follows:

Day 1     San Miguel via Estrella Road         44 miles   2031 ft ascent

Day 2     Peachy Canyon                                35 miles   3027 ft ascent

Day 3     Hog Canyon Road                           49 miles   2451 ft ascent

Day 4     Chimney Rock                                  40 miles   3310 ft ascent

Day 5     Sculpterra Winery                           43 miles   2293 ft ascent

WEATHER:  The weather along California's Central Coast in April varies, but is usually best described as "crisp in the mornings but warming in the afternoons."  Typical lows during this time of year are 40's F with the highs approaching the mid-70's F.  Average rainfall for April may reach a total of one inch; cold weather kit as well as rain gear are recommended.

LODGING & MEALS:  Lodging for six nights is included in the Estimated Cost for this ride. The Courtyard by Marriott located at 120 South Vine, Paso Robles, CA 93446 ph. 805-239-9700 will serve as our host hotel.  Social hours will take place on site at the hotel meeting room each evening and on site laundry facilities are also available.  Two group dinners are included for this week as well as six social hours to include appetizers, wine, beer and soft drinks.  Six breakfasts are also included from the Bistro at the Courtyard.  Lunch will be the responsibility of each participating rider during and/or after each daily ride.

LOGISTICS:  Paso Robles, CA is on Hwy 101, roughly midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.  If you are flying to California, consider using the San Jose Airport, 160 miles north or the Santa Barbara Airport, 125 miles south and then renting a car.  Most who fly from out of state secure rental vehicles which are handy for visiting local wineries, historic missions and other points of interest as well as being used for remote start rides.  Our first meeting / social hour will start at 5:00pm on Sunday 4-14-2024.  Checkout  and departure is planned for Saturday morning 4-20-2024.  K-Man Cyclery located at 712 Paso Robles Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446 ph. 805-237-2453 is an excellant local bike shop which I have used in the past.  In addition, for those wishing to rent bikes, please contact Paso Robles Tours located at 5940 El Pomar Drive, Templeton, CA 93465 ph. 805-440-5085.  Rental bikes are delivered and picked up at your hotel in Paso Robles and may be worth considering if you are flying in from out of town.

COST & ADMINISTRATION:  The Estimated Cost for this tour is $1,550 and includes six daily social hours (with an emphasis on local wines and beer; non-alcoholic beverages and a variety of appetizers), six breakfasts, two group dinners, hotel gratuities, RWGPS maps, cue sheets and .gpx files for your digital devices. Riders need to download all digital routes from RWGPS prior to arriving for the tour.  Please contact me directly prior to arriving for the tour if you need any assistance with your device.  The initial tour deposit of $550 is to be paid at time of Sign-Up.  The final payment of $1,000 is due on January 31, 2024.

SINGLES & SOLOS POLICY:  Single riders are encouraged to attend and every effort will be made to find a suitable roommate.  Solos are welcome and will pay a $600 solo supplement.  It is recommended that singles who want a roommate try to find their own. However, after receipt of the initial deposit, a single without a roommate will be placed on the ride and given until December 31, 2023 to find a roommate. If they are unable to find a roommate, they will have the option to receive a full refund (minus the BAC fee and payment processing fee) or pay the $600 solo supplement and stay on the ride. If a single pays the supplement, they may continue to seek a roommate, but must plan to participate without a roommate if necessary. The Ride Leader will assist by attempting to match singles who apply for the ride. Solo supplement payments need to be sent to the BAC office. Checks should be made out to “BAC” with a notation of the tour name included on the check. They should be mailed to: Bicycle Adventure Club, PO Box 23998, San Diego, CA 92193.

CANCELLATION POLICY:  The BAC ride registration fee and payment processing fees are not refundable unless the entire tour is cancelled due to participation below stated minimum requirements.  Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped.  The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour's remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations.  If the cancelling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time.  If the cancelling participant can't be replaced, any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report are completed.  BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.

HEALTH & SAFETY Participants are expected to come to the tour in good health and ready to ride. Prior to the final payment for the tour, an infectious disease plan will be developed and communicated. The plan will identify possible actions for dealing with persons with an infectious disease on the tour that could affect their ability to ride or the health of others in the group. The plan will include items such as isolation protocols, testing, masking, distancing, and leaving the tour.

RIDE PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY:  Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support.  Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles.  All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour.  We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to requests from the Ride Leader.  While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and clean-up.  Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour.  Please keep the Ride Leader informed of any special request you may have and respect the Ride Leader's decisions.

Before participating in any BAC tour, you should assess whether your medical and travel insurance coverage is sufficient. BAC maintains insurance that covers expenses related to accidents. This coverage applies when touring inside the US, regardless of your nationality. It’s assumed that members’ personal insurance will cover medical emergencies such as sudden and unexpected sickness, so these have not been included in the BAC policy. Coverage is subject to a $1,000 deductible. You may want to consider personal coverage for emergency evacuation, as this is not included. The costs of treatment or quarantine for Covid and other unexpected illnesses are not covered. You should ensure that your vaccinations are up to date.

SIGN-UP:  To register for this ride, use the sign-up links just above the Ride Decription.  After preliminary acceptance, you will be moved to the pending list and receive an email requesting that you go back to the BAC website to digitally accept the Release of Liability (ROL), and pay the non-refundable BAC Ride Registration Fee of $50 and tour deposit of $550 by credit card.  As soon as your deposit has been processed, your name(s) will be added to the Participant List.  The final payment of $1,000 is due on January 31, 2024. BAC members with questions may contact the Ride Director by "clicking" the name at the top of this Ride Description.
