Ride Description

General Information & Ride Overview:  The fjord coastline of Norway is a natural wonder, carved by glaciers and leading to a unique system of roads and ferries to traverse the Western Fjord Region where our experience is concentrated. Starting on Saturday 9th August 2025 in Alesund, this bike and boat adventure covers the Western Fjord regions of Møre og Romsdal and Sunnmøre. We will ride some of the most iconic sites including Geriangerfjord, Trolls Ladder, Valdall and Andalsnes, gateway to the fjords. Our fully supported and guided adventure begins right in the heartlands of fjord country, staying in carefully selected accommodations, and deeply experiencing the nature and culture of the country whilst enjoying active exploration on bike, foot and by boat. We will visit at the best time for great summer weather and will undertake a series of rides and multi adventure activities. We recommend flying into Oslo and arriving a few days early to explore that area before either flying or taking the scenic Rauma Railway to the Western Fjords region. On Saturday 16th August 2025, our ride ends in Ålesund with a group transfer to the airport (AES) where plenty of international options are available via Schiphol, Amsterdam.

Daily Breakdown Meals Provided (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner) HH=Happy Hour

Day 1 (Sat, Aug 9th, 2025): Arrival day in Ålesund.  Arrive today at your leisure. There is a convenient airport bus into the centre of Alesund, close to our hotel. Bikes will be available at the rental store close by to our hotel for fitting, and we will meet in the afternoon for formal introductions and a rider meeting with our guide team to hear about the adventure to come. Afterwards the evening is at your leisure; take a stroll in the midnight sun and explore ‘Norway’s most beautiful town’.

● Hotel: 1904 in Ålesund

● Meals:  HH

Day 2 (Sun Aug 10th, 2025): Stage 1 - Ålesund to Molde

The first ride of our journey from Ålesund to Molde via Fiksdal, Tomrefjord and Vestnes offers a serene blend of fjords, mountains, and picturesque villages. Riding along the water for most of the day, we’ll witness dramatic coastal views, peaceful waters, and lush greenery. The ferry from Vestnes to Molde is a standout, with panoramic vistas of Romsdalsfjorden and surrounding peaks. Arriving in Molde, we’re greeted by its famous mountain panorama of the Sunmore Alps.

● Ride - 90km/ 56miles, +800m/ +2,650ft

● Hotel Scandic Molde + 2 course dinner

● Meals (B,L,D), HH

Day 3 (Mon Aug 11th 2025): Stage 2 - Molde to Hustadvika

Our second day of biking, and we will leave the fjords for the Atlantic coast. Surrounded by water most of the day, we begin riding the famously scenic Atlantic Road. This architectural masterpiece has eight bridges connecting a series of islands with the mainland. The scene may look familiar to movie buffs, as the location was used in the most recent Bond movie.

● 90km/ 56miles, +750m/ +2,450ft.

● Hotel Hustadvika gjestegård + 3 course dinner

● Meals (B,L,D), HH

Day 4 (Tue Aug 12th 2025): Stage 3 - Hustadvika to Andalsnes

The journey from Hustadvika to the Sølsnes ferry via Banafjordsøra is a masterclass in Norwegian coastal beauty.  We start with the raw, untamed charm of Hustadvika, where rugged cliffs meet the wild sea. As we head inland, the pace slows through Banafjordsøra, a tranquil fjordside gem with postcard-perfect views. The quiet roads wind past lush hills and tranquil fjord waters. Ending with the Sølsnes ferry, where Langfjorden's glistening peaks steal the show. It’s a ride that captures Norway’s fjord scenery well.

● 80km/ 50miles, +650m/ +2,150ft.

● Grand hotel Andalsnes + 2 course dinner

● Meals (B,L,D), HH

Day 5 (Wed August 13, 2025): Stage 4 - Andalsnes to Valldal

We start the day in the mountain village of Andalsnes. From there we will complete one of the region's most iconic one day rides, a 51km section on a famous road to reach Valldal on the other side of the mountain. One of the tougher climbs in the region awaits – but the view at the top is totally worth it! The highest point of the Trollstigen road lies at 705m above sea level, and from the viewpoint we can see directly down on the masterfully structured switchbacks making it possible to climb the steep mountainside. After completing our challenging climb, we can look forward to a mostly downhill leg to the Fjordside village of Valldal. In the evening we will take a visit to a salmon farm by electric speedboat.

● Distance: 60km/ 37miles, +1,000m/ +3,250ft

● Hotel Valldal Fjordlodge

● Meals: (B/L/D), HH

Day 6 (Thu Aug 14th, 2025): Stage 5 - Valldal to Sæbø

Leaving behind tranquil Valldal, we return to the water, crossing by ferry to Eidsdal and riding the mountain road to Geiranger. Today’s ride includes a couple of climbs, but we will have earned the views. As we make our way down the hairpin bends to Geriangerfjord we can stop at the Ørnesvingen viewpoint to get the perfect photo of the UNESCO World Heritage fjord landscape. Then descend to Gerianger where we take our second ferry of the day, past old farm hamlets clinging on to little patches of green high up on the mountainsides, and waterfalls cascading down into the deep fjord. For our final section, we will tackle the Queens stage, a beautiful section ending in our last ferry of the day, to the town of Sæbø where we spend the night.

● Distance: 75km/ 47miles, +1,000m/ 3,250ft

● Hotel Sagafjord

● Meals: (B/L/D), HH

Day 7 (Fri Aug 15th, 2025): Stage 6 (Final) - Sæbø to Ålesund

Today is a fitting last leg for our epic journey: a biking road along 80 km of mountains and Fjord coastline, along some of the most breathtaking natural and cultural landscape Norway has to offer. The jagged peaks of the Sunmøre Alps are a constant backdrop, and the narrow valleys make this a haven for adventure seekers and leisure travelers. In the evening we will meet in our last hotel for a great dinner to discuss the special day and celebrate our achievement.

● Distance: 80km/ 50miles, +980m/ +3,200ft

● Hotel: Hotel 1904

● Meals: (B/L/D)

Day 8 (Sat Aug 16th, 2025): Depart Our tour ends after breakfast today. Taxis from the hotel can be arranged or use the airport bus to travel to Vigra Airport. If looking for more Nordic adventure, the overnight cruise ferry to Bergen is recommended, where you can spend a few days exploring!

Rating, Pacing and Terrain: This ride is rated “3C” with an average daily distance of 79 km/50 miles and an elevation gain of 833 m/2,830 ft. In total, we cover just over 475km/ 300miles, and climb +5,000m/ +17,000ft, over 6 riding days. Rides are achievable for an experienced cyclist with a good level of fitness. The terrain is all on quiet roads in good condition. The region we will ride consists of glacial fjords, and as such we will cover several climbs, but grades are rarely over 8%. Treks require a reasonable level of fitness also. Throughout the ride we will have vehicle support available and riding guides on hand.

Cue sheets, maps, GPS files: GPS files will be provided prior to the ride. Cue sheets will be available from Ride with GPS.

Weather:  August is a great month to visit, with temperatures in Ålesund ranging from 48° to 65°F/9° to 18°C. For riding, layers to start rides in the morning, and peeled off in the warmth of the day is the best strategy. Carry a light windproof or showerproof jacket. Support vehicles are always on hand to carry day bags which can be accessed easily.

Lodging & Meals: Included will be daily breakfast, 7 group lunches/ picnics and 6 group dinners. Our adventure in Norway uses mostly hotels around the 3- and 4-star rating. The accommodations are always friendly and with a personal touch. Their style varies from chain hotels to boutique lodgings.

Logistics: The tour will begin Saturday August 9th, 2025 at our first Rider meeting at 6pm in Alesund at our first hotel and end after breakfast in Alesund on Saturday August 16th 2025. For those bringing their own bikes, bike box storage is available at the Bike rental office in Alesund.

Both KLM and Scandinavian Airlines have flights that fly into Alesund with connections in Amsterdam and Oslo respectively.

Entry Conditions At the time of writing, any citizen of a country in the Schengen area, the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom among others does not require a visa.  Those who are from a country outside the Schengen area, such as the U.S. and Canada, require a passport from their country of citizenship that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Norway is on track to become one of the first countries to go cashless. However, it's a good idea to have some cash on you for incidentals, either in USD or better yet some local currency (NOK). ATMs, are the easiest ways to get local currency. Almost all ATMs will accept foreign cards. Having some US dollars in cash will enable you to change some money in case of card issues. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, as is NOK cash.

Cost and Administration:  Total tour cost is $5,250 USD per person based on double occupancy. A deposit of $1800 USD will be required when registering for the ride.  A second payment of $1800 USD will be due February 9, 2025. The final payment of $1650 will be due on May 9, 2025.

Included in the cost of the trip is 7 nights’ accommodation; guiding and support services including ferry transfers; snacks and drinks while riding; GPS files; and happy hours with light snacks (Alcoholic beverages will not be provided due to the price of alcohol in Norway).  Not included in the cost of the tour are airfares, soft drinks with meals, any alcohol, and bike rentals.

Singles and Solo Policy:  Singles and solos are welcome. It is recommended that singles who want a roommate try to find their own. However, after receipt of the initial deposit, a single rider without a roommate will be placed on the ride and given until April 5, 2025 to find a roommate. If they are unable to find a roommate, they will have the option to receive a full refund (minus the BAC Ride Registration Fee and Payment Processing Fee) or pay the $1350 USD Solo Supplement and stay on the ride. If a single pays the supplement, they may continue to seek a roommate, but must plan to participate without a roommate if necessary. The Ride Leader will assist by attempting to match singles who apply for the ride.

The solo supplement payment of $1350 USD is due by April 5, 2025 and can be paid by Zelle or check. To pay using Zelle:

  • In your bank's website, add Bicycle Adventure Club as a new recipient, with email address treasurer@bicycleadventureclub.org
  • Initiate a payment
  • In the Message block, enter the name of your ride.

If you have questions, contact Nancy Bohnett (nbohnett@bicycleadventureclub.org) or Ernie Coose (erniecoose.bac@gmail.com). Checks should be made out to “BAC” with a notation of the tour name included on the check and mailed to: Bicycle Adventure Club, PO Box 23998, San Diego, CA 92193.

Cancellation Policy: The BAC Ride Registration Fee and Payment Processing Fees are not refundable unless the entire tour is canceled because the number of participants registered is less than the minimum established for the tour. Refunds of tour payments will depend upon whether a replacement rider signs up, and on costs that can be recouped. The amount refunded will be based on the principle that the tour’s remaining participants will not incur any additional cost as a result of cancellations. If the canceling participant is replaced, a refund will be made at that time. If the canceling participant can't be replaced, any refund will be determined after the ride and final expense report is completed. If a single participant cancels and another roommate cannot be found, in addition to other costs that cannot be recouped the canceling roommate may also be liable for the solo supplement fee of the roommate remaining on the tour. BAC encourages members to purchase trip cancellation insurance.

We Adventure will also apply its cancellation policy.  If your spot is filled, you will receive a full refund minus the non-refundable admin fee (will generally be $150). Any cancellation due to covid reasons in the destination will be refundable in full. In all other cases the following policy is applied by WeADVENTURE:

120+ days : Admin Expenses Incurred

46 – 119 days: 30% withheld

8 – 45 days: 50% withheld

0 – 7 days: No refund provided.

*Admin Expenses are generally calculated as $150 to cover bank fees and admin, unless additional non recoverable supplier costs must also be deducted[E1] .

Ride Participant Responsibility: Please remember that BAC Ride Leaders are volunteers, and that successful tours depend on participants providing much of their own support. Participants are expected to come to the ride well trained, in good health and ready to accomplish the required daily riding using well-maintained bicycles.  Should someone's health become compromised and the group’s health and safety placed in jeopardy, a plan will be developed by the ride leader(s) and communicated to all individuals. The expectation is for the group to work together to mitigate any spread of infection or illness as a means to ensure the tour can continue as planned.

Vaccinations for Covid are recommended but are not required.  No additional vaccinations are required to visit Norway. Make sure that you bring any prescription medications you require, and that they are clearly marked with the reason and dosage.

Before participating in any BAC tour, you should assess whether your medical and travel insurance coverage is sufficient. BAC maintains insurance that covers expenses related to accidents, medical emergencies such as sudden and unexpected sickness, and repatriation. This coverage applies when touring outside the US and your home country, regardless of your nationality. It will cover you door-to-door for a maximum of 90 days but will expire if you make a side trip not related to the BAC tour for more than 7 days before or after. There is limited coverage for a family member to join a covered person in an emergency. The policy covers the cost of treatment for Covid and other unexpected illnesses but not quarantine. You should ensure that your vaccinations are up to date.  Coverage is subject to a $1000 deductible.

All participants should accept responsibility for a safe and enjoyable tour. We encourage you to read the ride description carefully and respond to requests from the Ride Leader. While on the ride, support your Ride Leader with offers to help with various tasks such as happy hour preparation and cleanup. Please do not interfere with the ride by inviting non-participants onto any portion of the ride or tour. Please keep the Ride Leader informed of any special request you might have and respect the Ride Leader’s decisions.

Sign-up: To register for this ride, use the sign-up links just above the Ride Description. After preliminary acceptance, you will be moved to the pending list and receive an email requesting you to go back to the BAC site to digitally accept the terms of the Release of Liability (ROL), and pay the Tour Deposit and the non-refundable BAC Ride Registration Fee by credit card. There is a $100.00 international ride fee. As soon as your deposit has been processed, your name(s) will be added to the Participant List. BAC members with questions may contact the Ride Director by "clicking" the name at the top of this Ride Description.
