Solvang Winter Break 2018

February 11th to February 17th

Ride Director: George Ellis
Ride Co-Director: Dianne Olsen
Report by: Emily Binnian

Thirty intrepid bicyclists joined George and Dianne for Solvang 2018, 6-days of adventure of friends leading friends on rides. True to BAC membership, our group was diverse with couples and singles, long-time friends, a first time member. Cyclists originated from across California and the West Coast, while others traveled from Alaska, the Rockies and two couples from the Eastern U.S. Almost half of our group have been coming on this ride for years.

Solvang enjoys sunshine throughout the year with clear, warm days and cool nights. Our week was a welcome mid-winter break for those from the rain or snow-bound conditions of home. True to the ride description, “there are multiple cycling options for average to accomplished riders.” The daily organized rides drew a steady group while other ventured off on suggested rides or extra routes. One day, some explored up Miguelito Canyon while others enjoyed time out of the saddle exploring nearby sites including wineries, historic missions, beaches and the Goleta Butterfly Grove.

The Wine Valley Inn once again offered a centralized and convivial setting for informal gatherings, breakfast, happy hour, starting out the days ride, and resting afterwards. Our organized dinners and informal Valentine’s evening out savored some of Solvang’s fine dining. A few BAC members frequented the knowledgeable Dr. J’s bicycle shop for rentals, repairs, referrals, and the occasional replacement need.

As the week progressed, the weather warmed along with the comradery. Our group photographer captured the Solvang 2018 spirit in both image and words:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with previous friends (I did not say old friends), and getting to know some new ones in such a relaxed and satisfying cycling venue. I think we all appreciated the warm fellowship contributed by George and Dianne. They were superb leaders and organizers, including delectable choices of local wines and beers for happy hours and excellent route maps, cues and GPS files.”

I’m sure there are more than a few of us who are already looking forward to Solvang 2019!
