The Pittsfield Ramble October 20-25, 2019
Fall is one of the most spectacular times of the year. New England abounds with a splendid array of color and scenery. Picturesque towns, quaint eateries, scenic views and historical places make the Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts a perfect fall getaway. Making the experience even more enriching is seeing it all from your bike. Welcome to the Pittsfield Ramble.
Riding
All rides began from the Hotel on North in Pittsfield. A quick jaunt through the city got you on to pleasant country roads. Some roads had more traffic than others but there were many stretches with very few cars. The drivers in general were courteous and all cars must come to a stop at pedestrian crossings. Each day there was a choice of routes to accommodate the different levels of riders with a mix of hills, flat roads and even some gravel options. The rides always had some challenging hills and climbs. Those seeking easier rides could find options.
The Mt. Greylock ride was nothing short of spectacular. After a long and arduous climb to the top of Massachusetts highest peak we were rewarded with 360 degree views to every nearby state. It was a long day but just about everyone who rode agreed that it was their favorite ride.
There were always choices for places to stop for a bite to eat. Two places really topped our list. One day our route took us to New York State were Blueberry Hill Market Cafe offered great food selections. Another unique stop was Ozzies in Hinsdale where the staff was especially friendly and accomodating. Ozzie himself greeted us and made us feel very welcome.
Seeing the Sights
The Berkshires offers many opportunities for those who like to explore the area. Stop by the Norman Rockwell Museum and enjoy the work of this iconic American painter. The Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum with restored buildings, crafts and activities. Just a note, they would not let us into the historic buildings in our bike shoes. A stop at the Crane Paper Museum was a bonus. We learned how paper is made and toured the site where paper for the United States currency is produced. FYI- trying to make your own cash just doesn’t pay!
Accommodations
Everyone booked their own accommodations but the majority of us stayed at the Hotel On North, the hub for our daily meetups. This historic hotel did not disappoint. It has been restored, making its charm and character stand out. The staff was very friendly. Rooms were large, newly renovated and cozy. Situated in the center of Pittsfield there are a variety of places to walk to get a meal, shop or admire the beautiful architecture of this historic town. No formal meals were included; each night groups of people would seek out local eateries for dinner. There were a wide variety of restaurants within walking distance.
It has been a lovely week. Claudia and Barry were new leaders and did a great job of planning the routes. Claudia was very organized and helpful when deciding where to ride each day. Barry was always available for those who might have bike issues. Our group did many rides together and it was wonderful to make new friends. Happy hours were lively with great comradery. Some of the group was staying on for the Ride Leader Seminar. Thanks to BAC, Claudia and Barry Spaulding and all the great bikers who made the Pittsfield Ramble so much fun.
