Rescheduled The Best of Tasmania 2023

February 2nd to February 17th

Ride Director: Robert Deering
Ride Co-Director: Arleen Sakamoto
Report by: David Raup

The Tasmania tour was a great tour.  February is the best time to ride there.

This was my first tour riding on the “wrong” side of the road.  I came prepared with a custom-mirror that attached to the RIGHT side of my glasses.  It was surprisingly challenging to adjust.  It took days, and I did make some mistakes (that I FORTUNATELY got away with).  SAFETY FIRST!!

They have the cleanest air in the world and the wildlife was amazing.  Tasmanian devils.  Penguins.  And more; the sounds of the birds were so different than in North America.  Visiting the UnZoo was a way to ensure that we at least saw the Tasmanian Devil.  Visiting the night time feeding of the Tasmanian devils was worth it AND is unforgettable.

Amazing seafood; don’t miss the scallop curry pie!

Tasmanian wine is extra special.  Interestingly, it can be expensive or difficult to get EVEN IN TASMANIA?  I learned that on a menu, if it says “SA” after the name of a wine, it’s a wine from Southern Australia and NOT from Tasmania.

Beachfront Bicheno was amazing.  A wonderful place to spend time.

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) wasn’t a part of our tour.  However, it is NOT to be missed while in Hobart.  Amazing place.

Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay are not to be missed.

Port Arthur was amazing.  Learning about the convict history and seeing the places first hand really underscores the history.

One odd thing about doing a trip to Tasmania is telling friends about it.  It seems that generally, folks don’t know the difference between “Tasmania” and “Tanzania.”  (Uhhh…different continents?).
