San Juan Islands and Beyond. What an Adventure!

First, let’s talk about the weather.

The weather, a mitigating factor on any San Juan island tour,  cooperated fully and we had only one rainy day. And we spent that day at the movies in Friday Harbor watching Tom Cruise in Maverick.

Now,  let’s talk about the tour. We started our adventure when we left Seattle on our bikes,  hopped a ferry, rode our  bikes, hopped another ferry and rode again, finishing up with a short but steep climb to our accommodations the Poulsbo Inn

From there it was on to Sequim and the Discovery Trail. An incredible trail filled with tall Douglas Fir and Cedar Trees. The next day we headed toward Port Townsend, once again a ride filled with spectacular scenery and a tree lined path that kept the sun off our backs.

Port Townsend’s history has been preserved and buildings dating back to the middle of the 19th century were everywhere. The lodging at the Swan Hotel offered views of the bay and the sea breezes kept us cool and comfortable. And the coffee, as in most coffee shops in the state of Washington, was some of the best I ever had, excluding of course Costa Rican Coffee!

The next day it was off to Whidbey and Fidalgo Island and over Deception Pass. The scenery was so stunning it took your breath away.

Anacortes and the ferry to FRIDAY HARBOR ON SAN JUAN ISLAND were up next.

The San Juan Islands were so strikingly beautiful that it is almost impossible to describe them in words. Let’s just say that it is a  place of overwhelming colors and hues.  From the grey of the clouds to the celestial blue sky peeking out to the slowly melting white  snow on the mountain tops. All of them melding into the indescribable   bluish grey tones of the Puget sound. The sights and sounds of the water followed us as we navigated around the outer edge of the island, always climbing up for a better view.

The sunsets at Kiln Lime Park were glorious. Bald eagles soared overhead and came to rest in their nests over our heads. The roads were quiet and serene as we rode our bikes and crested up the hills,  knowing the downhill was worth working for.

Kudos to Werner, Glenn and Barbara for a great trip that we will always remember.
