California, Central Coast and Wine Country

May 1st to May 11th

Ride Director: Kristi Brubaker
Ride Co-Director: Roy Brubaker
Report by: Gary Schaps

Twenty-two riders joined BAC’s 2022 California, Central Coast and Wine Country Tour led by Kristi and Roy Brubaker.  California, Chicago, Connecticut, Florida, North Carolina, Texas and Washington were all represented.  Pre-ride communication from the ride leaders was excellent. Ride-With-GPS navigation as well as route sheets were provided including “Day 0” options for early arrivals.  Good accommodations throughout the tour with standouts being the Courtyard Marriot in SLO and the Paso Robles Inn.  Lots of restaurant and sightseeing recommendations along the way.  Happy hours were well provisioned and enjoyed by all.  We were fortunate to have mostly sunny days with cool mornings.

The first day’s ride took us through farm country north of San Luis Obispo (SLO) on our way to Cambria, with stops in Morro Bay at The Museum of Natural History, Sun-And-Buns pastry shop and elsewhere. Lots of great photo ops!  The next day's ride offered the opportunity to ride Santa Rosa Creek road, a sometimes challenging, always scenic route toward Templeton and onward to our two night stay in Paso Robles.  Roy provided an exceptional route out of Paso through Peachy Canyon for the next ride back to SLO where many took in the downtown Farmer’s Market.  Onward through Avila Pier, Pismo Beach and Guadalupe toward Santa Maria day five. Most enjoyed a stop at Old West Cinnamon Rolls along the way. The next day’s ride was long (58 mi.) and challenging ( 3240’) but, again quite scenic and it was great to enjoy a layover day in Solvang.  Roger and Kelly rode the 5018’ Figueroa Loop there, a ride that Roy characterized as “difficult”.

Riding northward from Solvang through Santa Maria and on to SLO presented us with some strong headwinds.  We toughed them out – builds character – and ended with a group dinner at the Madonna Inn in SLO.  Overall, a very enjoyable tour with great comradery. Thanks to everyone who participated and to our ride leaders, Kristi and Roy, who worked diligently to provide a fun journey for all.
