Ride Description

Meet - Saturday June 26th in Kalispell Montana with the last day of riding Saturday July 10th in Jasper, Alberta with an all day bus ride back to Kalispell July 11th. This is a repeat of the 2002 trip and a continuation of the trips run by Don Smith on numerous previous occasions. The first two days of riding include Lake MacDonald Lodge, over the Logan Pass (Going To The Sun) to Many Glaciers in Glacier Park, Montana. The border into Canada is crossed on the third day with an additional rest day in Waterton National Park. A day is then spent in the Crow's Nest Pass area and a following 90 mile day on rolling terrain to Longview and the Highwood River Valley. Following this is a ride over the Highwood Pass into Kananaskis Park, Alberta, with the following day travel to Banff National Park with another rest day. The trip then carries on over the Icefields Parkway through Lake Louise, and over two more mountain passes ending up in Jasper National Park. The longest riding day is 90 miles, with three 5X days the rest being 4X, with an average riding day of around 60 miles. The riding is almost entirely on all weather good paved roads with a wide shoulder for good riding. This trip features spectacular mountain scenery in the late springtime and early summer, with glaciers, high water levels and wildlife. Also one achieves a good exposure to the history of the Western United States and Canada in particular by optional visits to museums and sites of interest, and discussions by the ride directors. Weather variations are a possibility, and at times wind can be a factor in southern Alberta. On the 2002 trip there was late clearance of Logan Pass which opened the day before the ride took place. Estimated cost will be $1500.00 US which will include all hotels, a van with driver, 5 to 6 meals including an open pit western barbeque and the potential for various side trips. Ride co-directors are Derald Oldring and William Kudryk.
